Cutting Waste in Health Care
In a recent
health care project, System 21 consultants
discovered surgeons using 18 pints of blood to perform an operation that for
some colleagues only required three pints of blood!
This is a tiny example of the waste reduction and best practice development
work that System 21 has performed in mainland
European hospitals and for National Health Trusts in Britain.
Projects have focussed on improving planning and resource allocation. Stock management of vital supplies, such as blood, pharmaceuticals and dressings, is critical. Appropriate methods of change have been applied, improving, among others, the dissemination of information throughout the hospital.
These
should be issues that concern all hospital managers regardless of the source
of health care funding. System 21 projects
suggest, however, that it is mainland European hospitals, generally run as
profit making businesses, that recognise most quickly the benefits of our
approach
